Basically, this cafe is one of several springing up in Boston’s rapidly growing specialty coffee scene. And actually to be more specific this is one of the shining stars in Boston Coffee Scene. The place is small but intimate. Not overly done in a what can be described as a “trying too hard” to be a funky kind of place .. if you know what I mean. Nope, this coffee cafe has a simple, well lite and clean look & feel going on while at the same time maintaining a sense of warmth. There’s pub table seating indoors and a couple of bistro sets out on the sidewalk where you can watch the world go by. .. And there always seems to be an interesting character or two.
Their offerings for coffee are pretty typical for a well done cafe (espresso, latte, coffee brewed from a pour-over method etc). I had a Cafe Americano over ice using a double shot of espresso. Very well done in my opinion with a little sourness and nice body and finish going on. As for a straight espresso shot you may or may not like it. What I mean by that is that it isn’t done completely by the book as the barista Giorgio Milos would prefer (see this Giorgio Milos blog entry on Traditional Espresso). They seem to be using a higher dose and the espresso shot has a “Guinness Effect” that you may or may not enjoy (see CoffeeGeek.com Crema Article for additional information).
I didn’t try the baked goods but they looked excellent and not of the type that comes out of a powdered mix or thawed from a boxed production-line deal. Who knows, there’s this great bakery down the street, should have asked. Now I’ll have to go back ;-p
In summary, as you can expect, we give Café Fixe (at 617-879-2500, 1642 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA) 4 cups up.
