Just catching up on some of the Cafe Review Posts we have in the stack. This coffee cafe, Brew’d Awakenening Coffeehaus, was visited last month in Lowell, Massachusetts. It’s located in downtown Lowell in one of it’s historic brick buildings. Anyway, we visited on a sunny October morning. On approaching the place you could see people lounging around outside, catching some sun and enjoying each other while reading the Sunday Paper over coffee and breakfast. So a very inviting place ..
Once inside you could see the high ceilings with it’s painted tin-work, brick walls and those large windows they built into these old buildings when capturing the natural light took priority over heat conservation. In all you don’t get an especially cosy feel (although you could head out to a cosy corner or the couch to chat or play one of the board games) but it had a relaxed vibe with a good energy fueled by the size of the space and it’s ample natural lighting. Here are some shots to give you an idea of what we’re talking about.
Anyway, for coffee I choose a Cafe Americano and the person I was with went with a Latte with a buttered bagel on the side. The Cafe Americano was good with a medium body and a quick finish, taste-wise it had some hints of leather & molasses notes going on which were nice.
As for the bagel… well…. it tasted alright but I was disappointed that the butter wasn’t melted and dripping. It actually came across as somewhat flat, good taste don’t get me wrong, but with the fatty butter just sitting there ….. Maybe the butter was refrigerated at too low a temperature and/or there was a delay getting it on the bagel itself. I don’t know. But the volume and quality of the butter was good. Anyway, you know what I mean. ….. But for all the angst this butter caused us, the little guy at the next table seemed to be completely enthralled by the whole thing.
In summary, good coffee, nice medium energy atmosphere and a great place to relax outdoors with your coffee when the weather is nice. The bagel although it had potential fell through the cracks from the lack of melted butter but this is an easy fix if you ask them to heat it up a bit. So we enjoyed this coffee cafe and will definitely make a second trip the next time we find ourselves in Lowell, MA. We give Brew’d Awakening Cofeehaus, 61 Market Street, Lowell, MA Ph 978-454-2739 http://www.brewdawakening.com/ a rating of three out of five cups
