Coffee Micro Roasters: 1 of 2 Roasting

I read a story yesterday of a guy down in Birmingham, Alabama who started his own Coffee Micro-Roasting Company. The guy’s name is Woody Wiginton and his story is a good read. This really is an area that many of us would like to get into and with the Internet and low cost express shipments your market can be as wide as you want it to be. So to go with the story here’s some photos, not of Woody’s operation but of a local Organic Coffee Roaster here in New England. Today’s pics will give [... click to continue reading]

Heating Up Chemex Coffee

After the pourover of 190F water is complete the resulting coffee can be a little cool to the taste. For myself I prefer a really warm cup of coffee in a thick walled preheated mug to help it stay that way & it cools down ever so slowly  … Gives one time to really wallow in that wonderful cup that’s created. So something that you’re probably already doing.. or maybe not. Add a quick bit of heat after the pourover is completed. You have to be careful about a couple things when you do this. First is [... click to continue reading]

Coffee & Health Study Finds That Coffee, Alcohol, Sex and Smog Trigger Heart Attacks

The Hesselt Center for Environmental Sciences has published a study that reports that coffee, alcohol, sex and smog are triggers for heart attacks. The specific breakdown is as follows: Coffee & Alcohol Combined = 5% Sex = 2.2% Heavy Meal = 2.7% Smog = 7.4% So if we abstain from the sex, heavy meals, coffee & alcohol and live in the country we’ll still have approximately 83% left that’s not covered by the above.  And of course these are the “triggers” which I think means the last straw from years of abuse … probably too much of the [... click to continue reading]

Cloth Coffee Filters For Pourover Coffee

Most of us tend to use paper coffee filters for our pourover coffee. Paper is fine but you can pick up some flavors and leave others behind. For instance, as we all know, lean towards bleached paper coffee filters since this won’t introduce as much of the “papery” flavors you get from the unbleached variety. And then of course, rinse your paper filter prior to use (a practice I have to admit I am terrible at keeping up with). This too removes papery flavor notes that even the bleached paper filters have. Just do a quick pour with [... click to continue reading]

Quick Chek Coffee Game To Win Free Coffee In NJ & NY Metro Area

Quick Chek recently published some data related to coffee drinking preferences of people living in the Metro NJ/NYC Areas… Only a several million people so it’s interesting as to what they prefer. And some of the most interesting bits don’t have anything to do with the NJ & NYC Area’s coffee trends. These are:  “Coffee is one of the world’s most valuable commodities, second only behind oil.  The Boston Tea Party of 1773 convened in a coffeehouse. The heavy tea tax had prompted Americans to switch to coffee as an expression of freedom.” If you’re [... click to continue reading]

A Biscotti & Double Espresso at Modern Pastry

Went to my doctor in Boston’s Italian North End the other day. Had to fast.. no coffee or food for sixteen hours. Oy vey .. Anyway after it was over went across the street to Modern Pastry, an old school Italian Pastry Shop for a wonderful biscotti & double espresso. Posted about this on the food blog.  Here’s an excerpt: Ordered two almond biscotti’s and a double espresso. Now they have a beautiful Cimbali Espresso Machine there and she pulled the shot in a nice white ceramic espresso cup. The total cost was only $3.75 [... click to continue reading]

Dunkin Donuts

Charity, giving money, your time and/or your love to someone for no apparent reason other than to help them out & brighten their day. Maybe if you feel obligated this really isn’t charity but duty & guilt working on you. Or if it makes you feel better about yourself.. then who cares, now you’ve made two people happy. And yeah you got the bum, homeless guy or whatever on the street conundrum of giving him change that helps him out or keeps him in booze & on the street. Maybe he’d still be on the [... click to continue reading]

The above is a sign from the Starbuck’s Cafe located in the Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston, MA. It of course says high quality coffee and working to get that indie coffee cafe feel. … And they do a pretty good job. As you know, there are so many coffee shops from the down & dirty convenience store/gas station coffee to the Stumptowns of the world and everything in between. Well, we were forwarded a survey from Rasmussen with some fascinating results. You can click on the link to get the data and analyze the validity of [... click to continue reading]

Franken-Roaster: An Outrageous Coffee Roaster Creation

I had the opportunity to see firsthand this homemade coffee roaster created from components that were never meant to be combined. It could be considered a thermo-mechanical innovation that thumbs it’s nose at the conventional coffee roaster industry, an extremely dangerous fire hazard with deadly potential for destruction, a functional yet  beautiful work of art that, like a fiery car wreak, you cannot turn away from or just a homemade machine that roasts the beans & “gets er done” in the totally unpretentious fashion of the redneck.. Who knows,… probably all of these. .. But just don’t [... click to continue reading]

Starbucks Coffee Coming To Your Single Serve Coffee Maker

Starbucks Coffee always seems to have something new going on. The latest is a major deal with Courtesy Products to use Starbucks Coffee in their single serve coffee machines in luxury and premium hotels. The rollout will begin this Fall. .. Which is nice. Remember getting into the hotel not that long ago and  they had this coffee ground stuff in a plastic-foil bag ? .. nearly impossible to open sometimes as you were trying to rush out in the morning. The bag would always have some real promise, as at least the marketing was [... click to continue reading]
